"We have a single room for all students and no toilets in our school."

Little Neha studies in a school where one teacher manages 110 students in a small room. No toilet or hygiene facilities are provided. Due to which many children drop out or miss out days of learnings.

Neha is the head of the student collective of a school in Balrampur District, Uttar Pradesh. Through Oxfam India's regular workshops and meetings, Neha was able to raise her voice and demand for better amenities for her school. When the school authorities didn’t listen, Oxfam encouraged her and other students to write to the District Magistrate. The students even protested, “shikshak do ya basta lo” (give us more teachers or we will quit school) and mobilized over 450 people in support. Soon more teachers, few toilet facilities and rooms were allotted. Even the Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav visited the school and ensured the students their rights.

" I like studying in school but…"

From a very young age, Komal’s life has been filled with hardships. Coming from a village in Uttar Pradesh (UP), she settled in Delhi with the dream of a better life. She enjoyed going to school. But soon a tragedy struck her family.

Komal lost her father in an accident. With no source of earning in the family, she had to sit at home and look after her siblings and her ageing grandmother. Her name was removed from the school and she lost all hope. But it wasn’t too late. Oxfam India got her enrolled in the remedial classes of Empowerment for Rehabilitation Academic & Health (EFRAH) that helped Komal to cover the six-month backlog. Soon with her siblings, they got admission in a government school. Komal was able to dream again.

“I wanted to study and one day play like Virat Kohli but…”

It was all going well for Ajay and his family. The 12-year-old boy was studying in a private school, enjoying his cricket sessions and dreaming of playing for the Indian team, like his hero Virat Kohli. But his dreams came to a halt after

his father’s business ran into financial losses. He no longer could go to school. Soon Oxfam India helped him enrol back in school under the Right to Education Act. Realizing Ajay’s potential Oxfam India helped him get into a Non-Formal Education (NFE) programme, where he attended classes for class 4. This year he will be promoted to class 9. Even his three sisters are also now studying in government schools.
