A Second Chance at Life

Naureen Khan & Gender Team, Oxfam India

Anjali is a domestic violence survivor who was born again from the ashes of the trauma she faced for 12 years. With help from Oxfam India, Anjali is now living a dignified life.

Anjali was married when she was barely 18-years-old. She was a bright student and wanted to study further, but all her pleas fell on deaf ears. From the very first day of her marriage, the nightmare began and the reality dawned that her husband was not only an alcoholic and unemployed but had married her for dowry.

Soon, she was beaten black and blue at the hands of her husband. Her parents advised her to tolerate and compromise to save their family honour. For 12 years, she suffered the violence in fear and silence. But she had had enough.

She came back to her hometown in Lucknow and decided never to look back again. Fortunately, this time her father realized the agony of his daughter and decided to support her.

She came in the contact with Oxfam India and its partner organization where she could seek advice. Oxfam India provided her with legal aid and consultations. She was soon able to file an FIR against her husband and later for divorce. The proceedings have started, but her husband hasn’t come on any of the hearing so far.

Anjali today stands tall and is confident about herself. She has enrolled in class 12th and hopes to become an independent woman. “In our society, a woman tolerates all the sufferings silently in the hope that one day everything will be alright. But violence only increases. I decided to put an end to my sufferings and give a second chance at life. I am thankful to Oxfam India for all their support and guidance that enabled me to start afresh,” says Anjali.

When generous people like you doante to Oxfam India, legal and financial aid, counselling, skill-development workshops are provided to women survivors to live a violence-free and dignified life.
