Oxfam India Disaster Risk Reduction Program Continues

Naureen Khan & Humanitarian Team, Oxfam India

When floods hit Assam last year over 33 lakh lives were devastated. Hazira Begam’s was one of them. She lost her agricultural farm and produce which was the only source of livelihood. She now lives in a very small thatched house with her husband and five children. Even though both Hazira and her husband now work as daily labourers, her children had to drop out of school due to non-payment of fees. The biggest problem they faced was the unavailability of safe drinking water and toilet facilities as the floods had contaminated the water and damaged the water pumps and wells.

She said, “During floods, chlorine tablet along with various other hygiene-related materials in the kit distributed by Oxfam India saved us from any diseases or illness but with no toilet facilities, open defecation was a huge challenge especially for us women”.

Oxfam India constructed toilets for men and women to reduce the risk of health hazard in floods-affected part of Assam. Oxfam India also constructed deep wells and elevated hand pumps which will reduce the contamination of water.

“Being a woman I now feel secure in maintaining our dignity. The latrine block was very helpful for me and my daughters”, says Hazira. Even after the floods are over, Oxfam India continues to work on the ground to help people recover from disasters.
