Stories of Change: Celebrating our feminist heroes
When Dolly won the bronze medal in a kick-boxing championship in Delhi, the moist eyes of her brother, Amit meant more than happiness. He recalled the struggles to get his sister enrolled for the sport.
Hailing from Bucchabasti in Purkazi block, Uttar Pradesh, Amit is a member of one of our youth groups who fought a patriarchal and orthodox society to support his sister’s dream.
Lack of proper facilities at school meant that many girls didn't have access or weren't allowed to attend schools beyond Class 7 in Amit's village. Through the intensive engagement with the communities by Oxfam India partner Astitva, Amit learnt about the gross violation of human rights and gender discrimination in everyday lives of the girls. He decided to challenge this at his own home by supporting his sister who wanted to pursue her career in sports. He worked hard to save money for Dolly’s sports classes.
Amit along with the members from the youth group started a campaign against rampant alcoholism in his village. The ‘Nasha Mukti Abhiyan’ spearheaded by him culminated in curbing this menace.
Alcohol is now not easily available on the streets of Bucchabasti.
We celebrate the brave heroes like Amit who have set the benchmarks in setting positive norms in our society.
