Chiligi’s fight for education
Oxfam India / Naureen Khan
13 year old, Chiligi dropped out of school after her father passed away. Due to poor economic condition and with no support from her family, going back to school was a struggle. But despite the hurdles in life she continued her studies and became a role model for other girls in her community.
After dropping out of school, Chiligi helped her family collect leaves from the forest which was the major source of income in her family. She was very enthusiastic to learn and study but household chores didn’t give her time to attend school.
Once Oxfam India and its partner organization learned about Chiligi’s school dropout, they conducted many counselling sessions with her mother. Oxfam supported School Management Committee and other parent’s interaction was also conducted to help her receive education. Her mother finally agreed and readmitted her in school. Soon, she became a part of the school cabinet which helped her raise voice for quality education.
Chiligi now regularly attends school in a small village in Odisha and is doing very well in her class. She even secured 502 marks out of 600 in class 8th. She now wants to set an example for her peer groups and community that education can help transform lives by increasing greater chances of escaping poverty and raising the standard of living.
Due to Oxfam and its partner organization, Sikshasandhans's intervention, initiatives of appointment of language teachers, the formation of child club, regular follow up procedure in attendance, intervention on reasons for drop out and other necessary activities witnessed the transformation in the tribal communities. This also helped children learn the importance of education and participated in learning activities.
