YOUR CONTRIBUTION TO OXFAM INDIA’S BIJAYINIi WOMEN SUPPORT CENTRE WILL HELP

THE IMPACT WE HAVE CREATED SO FAR

Oxfam India has been advocating for better implementation of the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act (PWDVA) at a national level. We first set up a Women Support Centre in 2004 in Hyderabad. Since 2008, we have established Women Support Centres in Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Odisha and Uttar Pradesh.

In Odisha, we registered 6 Bijayini Centres

  • In 2022, we offered counselling and other support services to more than 1000 women survivors. 44% of the cases were resolved through counselling
  • We sensitised stakeholders—students, police, women's rights organisations, legal services, and shelter homes—to refer women to the centres or take gender-sensitive action in their families or community
  • Our centres also provided linkages to schemes and livelihood options to around 40 survivors.

The Women Support Centres in Odisha* are set up based on the order of the Director General of Police to the Superintendent of Police to support and institutionalise these Centres to address gender-based violence.

*In Odisha, 30.6 % of ever-married women in the age group 15-49 years have experienced spousal violence. This proportion is higher than the national average of 29%. This is connected with the deep-set patriarchal gender norms that reinforce (or justify) violence against women at many levels—physical, mental, sexual, economic. Despite having progressive legislation and programmes to curb the situation, many cases go unreported. (NFHS 2019-2022)
