In 2020-2021 Oxfam India reached out to 24.32 lakh people

The businesswomen of Jharkhand

Illiteracy is just a minor hurdle for the women of Godda district in Jharkhand, who are spearheading the Sal leaf plates business. Taking advantage of the superior quality of Sal leaves in their villages, they manufacture and sell finished plates and bowls at a profit.

With our on-ground partners we set up Sal leaf plate making units in the district. Women were trained to use the machines to manufacture plates and bowls. The village is more than happy to sell them the handmade plates, for which they offer 50 p per 20 plates, more than the petty trader. After pressing and packing, the group makes a net profit of at least Rs 10 from each set. Not only this, most of the manufacturing units are run on solar power, thus making the business environmentally sustainable.

In the last 10 years, Oxfam India has changed the lives of more than 20,000 women from the most marginalised and vulnerable communities across India through innovating farming practices and livelihood training.

Your support will enable us to reach out to more such women and help them make a mark for themselves.

Rural women empowerment to end discrimination

Discrimination based on gender is a reality for all women and girls in India. Regressive social norms lead to violence against women and girls and deny them control over their own lives. As a result, women are also deprived from accessing equal opportunities and financial resources.

During the pandemic, women bore the brunt. Unemployment was higher among women, they bore the increased burden of unpaid care work, and there was a rise in the number of domestic violence cases.

Our experience shows that when women are economically independent they can better access equal opportunities, stand up for their rights, and create a more equal and just society.

We need you NOW more than EVER.

You can help us build an India without discrimination. Make a contribution today.
